Mahjong Classes

Discover the fun, strategy, and social connection of American Mahjong in this welcoming, hands-on class designed for beginners. Whether you have never touched a Mahjong tile or have played a few times and would like a better understanding of the game, this class will give you the foundation and confidence you need to get started. Participants will learn the basics of American Mahjong, including how to identify and understand the tiles, read and use the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card, set up the game, build the walls, deal the tiles, and complete the Charleston. We will also cover how to recognize possible hands, make exchanges, use Jokers, call tiles, and work toward completing a Mahjong hand.

Instruction is provided in a relaxed, supportive classroom environment with plenty of hands-on practice. We break the game down step-by-step, answer questions along the way, and allow participants to practice what they have learned at the table.

Mahjong is much more than a game—it is an opportunity to exercise your mind, learn something new, meet people, and enjoy time around the table. No previous experience or partner required. Come learn the tiles, understand the card, and discover the fun of American Mahjong!

About the Instructor:  Robin Hall is a passionate Mahjong enthusiast, experienced educator, and dedicated community advocate who believes some of the best connections and friendships begin around a table. Before retiring, Robin spent 25 years teaching professional accounting and accounting software.  Her teaching style is patient, encouraging, organized, and hands-on. She enjoys breaking the game into easy-to-understand steps and creating a comfortable classroom environment where students can ask questions, practice, laugh, and learn at their own pace. Robin has introduced hundreds of players to American Mahjong through beginner classes, guided play, private instruction, leagues, and community events. One of her favorite parts of teaching is watching a new player go from looking at a table full of unfamiliar tiles to confidently reading the card, making decisions, and calling “Mahjong!” Robin is a lifelong Houston Astros fan and is deeply committed to giving back to her community. She believes in the power of shared experiences, whether around a Mahjong table, cheering for the Astros, or supporting a local cause to bring people together.  For Robin, retirement didn’t mean retiring from teaching; it simply meant trading accounting books for Mahjong tiles and finding a new way to do what she has always loved: teach, connect, and build community—one tile at a time.
