Wellness Coordinator

Reports To: Wellness and Fitness Manager / Starport Operations Leadership 
Status: Non-Exempt (Full-Time, 32 hours/week; Temp-to-Hire 

Compensation Hourly Range: $21.00 – $26.00/hour based on experience and certifications 

Overview 

The Wellness Coordinator is responsible for executing member engagement strategies, wellness initiatives, and program activation efforts for the Gilruth Fitness Center at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC). This role focuses on strengthening member retention, increasing participation, and enhancing the overall wellness experience through intentional engagement, event execution, and personalized follow-up. 

Working within Starport—the morale and welfare team engagement division of JSC—the Wellness Coordinator plays a key role in fostering a connected, energized, and healthy workforce aligned with NASA’s mission.

Your Role in the Mission 

As the Wellness Coordinator, you will serve as the operational driver of engagement, wellness coaching and integration, ensuring that programs, services, and events translate into meaningful participation and measurable outcomes. 

You will bridge the gap between: 

  • Strategy (Manager-level leadership) 
  • Programming (Fitness & Wellness offerings) 
  • Member experience (frontline engagement) 

Key Responsibilities 

Member Engagement & Retention 

  • Conduct new member onboarding, assessments, and wellness consultations 
  • Perform routine check-ins and follow-ups to support member progress 
  • Monitor engagement trends and identify at-risk members 
  • Execute targeted outreach to re-engage inactive members 
  • Support behavior change through accountability and relationship-building 

Event & Program Execution 

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute wellness events and engagement initiatives 
  • Lead quarterly small-scale events (e.g., fitness challenges, workshops, tournaments) 
  • Support execution of one to two annual large-scale events (e.g., AVA 5K) 
  • Manage logistics, communications, and participant experience 
  • Track participation metrics and evaluate program success 

Wellness Conversion/Integration Support 

Coach and advise members on the most appropriate services to support their wellness goals and engagement journey, including: 

  • Group fitness programs 
  • Personal training 
  • Stretch therapy 
  • Nutrition services 
  • Wellness and recreation programs 
  • Conduct post-event and post-assessment follow-ups to increase utilization 
  • Partner with fitness staff to align services with member goals 

Engagement Tracking & Reporting 

  • Track participation, engagement, and retention metrics 
  • Maintain accurate records of member interactions and program outcomes 
  • Provide insights and recommendations to improve engagement strategies 
  • Support continuous improvement of the member journey 

Community & Wellness Culture 

  • Build relationships with members to foster a sense of community 
  • Promote inclusive, supportive wellness experiences 
  • Assist in developing a culture of health and engagement across JSC 
  • Other duties as assigned 

What You Bring to the Team 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in: 
    • Kinesiology 
    • Exercise Science 
    • Health Promotion / Public Health 
    • Recreation Management 
    • Psychology or Behavioral Science 
    • Sports Management  
    • Parks & Recreations  
  • Equivalent experience may be considered 

Experience 

  • 2–4 years of experience in: 
  • Fitness, wellness, or recreation programs 
  • Member engagement or customer experience 
  • Event coordination or program delivery 
  • Outreach and marketing 
  • Experience in a corporate wellness or fitness center environment preferred 

Skills & Requirements 

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills 
  • Ability to motivate and influence behavior change 
  • Event planning and coordination experience 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills 
  • Ability to track and interpret engagement data 
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) 
  • Customer-focused, proactive, and solutions-oriented mindsets 
  • Experienced self-starter with a bias for action  

Certifications  

  • ACE, NASM, NSCA, and/or ACSM fitness professional
  • NBHWC approved Wellness Coach Preferred (Preferred but Not Required) 
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification within the first three months  

Other Requirements 

  • Must have a valid DL 
  • Must be able to pass a background check 
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends for events 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, perform light physical activity and assist with event setup
