Fitness and Wellness Program Specialist

About the Role

The Wellness and Fitness Specialist is responsible for designing, coordinating, and delivering a variety of fitness and wellness initiatives that foster a culture of well-being. This role combines program development and administration with direct member engagement, offering organization-wide wellness events and fitness opportunities.


Working closely with the Fitness and Wellness Manager and other organizational partners, the program specialist ensures programs are cohesive, engaging, and aligned with the needs of the population served. A key aspect of this role is balancing philanthropic, NASA community-focused initiatives with sustainable, revenue-generating programs to support both mission-driven goals and organizational growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Design & Implementation: Develop and deliver wellness and fitness programs that encourage healthy lifestyles. Provide step-by-step plans, program details, goals, and resources to ensure successful execution both virtually and in person.
  • Fitness Programming: Create, schedule, and promote fitness classes, workshops, and challenges that encourage physical activity and engagement. Serves as backup group fitness instructor when needed.
  • Employee Engagement: Develop creative approaches to increase program participation and encourage long-term health behavior change.
  • Needs Assessment: Conduct and analyze member interest and survey data to guide programming decisions and recommend action-oriented solutions.
  • Events & Campaigns: Plan and support wellness fairs, fitness challenges, and campaigns, coordinating speakers, demonstrations, and local health resources.
  • Health Coaching & Education: Collaborate with partners and contractors to create and distribute educational materials on fitness, nutrition, and overall wellness.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to align services and increase resource awareness.
  • Research & Innovation: Stay current on fitness and wellness trends, applying new ideas and best practices to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Philanthropy & Revenue Balance: Design and manage programs that serve the community and support philanthropic goals, while also creating sustainable, revenue-generating offerings.
  • Administration & Reporting: Maintain records, track program metrics, and prepare reports to evaluate outcomes and guide continuous improvement.
  • Other Duties: Support additional wellness and fitness-related projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, Nutrition, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience developing and managing fitness and wellness programs (corporate, academic, or community-based setting preferred).
  • Nationally recognized fitness certification (e.g., ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM) preferred.
  • CPR/AED certification required.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance and confidentiality requirements.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage both individuals and groups.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Regular lifting up to 50 pounds 
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, squat, climb, crawl, push, pull, stand or walk or perform other physical activities for extended periods of time

  • $17.00 – $20.00 Per Hour
