NASA’s goal is to achieve a strong economy in low Earth orbit from which the agency can purchase services as one of many customers to meet the agency’s needs. To achieve this, NASA established the Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program at Johnson Space Center, which is facilitating the development of commercially owned and operated low Earth orbit destinations from which NASA, along with other customers, can purchase services and stimulate the growth of commercial activities in low Earth orbit.
This strategy allows NASA to maximize its resources toward missions beyond low Earth orbit while still having the ability to utilize low Earth orbit for its ongoing needs. A robust commercial space economy ensures that national interests for research and development in low Earth orbit are fulfilled, while also allowing NASA to focus government resources on deep space exploration through the Artemis program.
