Marina L. Benigno, director of the Center Operations Directorate at NASA's Stennis Space Center (SSC), has received NASA's prestigious J. Harry Guin Outstanding Leadership Award.

SSC Director Adm. Thomas Q. Donaldson V, USN (Ret.) and NASA's Glenn Research Center (Ohio) Director Dr. Julian M. Earls presented the award to Benigno during a ceremony held at SSC on Thursday, June 9, 2005.

NASA's J. Harry Guin Outstanding Leadership Award recognizes an individual who has provided exemplary leadership that has significantly enhanced the role, capability, or professional recognition of SSC within the nation's space, scientific or administrative communities. The award is named in honor of J. Harry Guin, a former director of SSC's Propulsion Test Directorate. Benigno was given the award for leading her organization to increase efficiency, lower costs and effectively use SSC resources, as well as her active support of the Combined Federal Campaign fund-raising drive, Special Olympics and other community events.

Benigno, a resident of Gulfport, Miss., grew up in central Florida and has an undergraduate degree from Stetson University and a Master's degree from Florida State University.

SSC is America's largest rocket engine test complex, and manages NASA's rocket propulsion testing. Besides rocket engine testing, SSC's Applied Sciences Directorate uses remote sensing technology to assist in solving problems related to erosion, agriculture and other practical problems. The center is located in Hancock County near Bay St. Louis, Miss.
