NASA Armstrong Awards Fire Protection Systems Repair Contract to Tucson Firm

NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California, has awarded a contract to Southwestern Dakotah, Inc., of Tucson, Arizona, for repair of fire protection systems in two of the center’s aircraft hangars.

The firm fixed-price construction contract is valued at about $7.1 million.

The contract covers labor, equipment, and materials to perform a variety of fire protection system repairs and upgrades in Hangars 4801 and 4802, which house both research and most of the center’s mission support aircraft.

Among other tasks, the work scope includes a new underground water service entrance for a new foam system in the two hangars, seismic bracing for new pipes to applicable design codes if required, installation of new draft curtains and mounting intake damper assemblies, upgrades to the electrical distribution system, and replacement of fire pumps, fire alarm control panel modifications, and fire alarm devices.

The contract specifies a 488-day performance period with an estimated completion date of Jan. 31, 2016.

Southwestern Dakotah has provided construction services at NASA Armstrong several times previously, most notably construction of the center’s Consolidated Information Technology Center that was completed approximately two years ago.
