OSDR Chats: “30 Years of Open Science”

Welcome to “OSDR Chats,” an interview series featuring authors of publications that were enabled by the Open Science Data Repository (OSDR). In this special issue, we hear from four members of Open Science who will speak on Celebrating 30 years of access to NASA Space Life Sciences data.

NASA’s space life sciences research programs have built a long history of helping us explore space safely. Starting with missions such as Skylab and the Space Shuttle Program, and continuing with the NASA Balloon Program and the International Space Station National Lab, these programs have provided valuable information about life in space. These data are shared with scientists through different databases, including the NASA Ames Life Sciences Data Archive (ALSDA) and NASA GeneLab. This article celebrates the 30 years of data access through ALSDA and 10 years with GeneLab available in the OSDR.

We recently spoke to Open Science to hear an overview of the repository, the breadth of research it has enabled, the role of the Analysis Working Groups (AWGs) that have fueled the success of OSDR, and commentary on the future of space biology research using OSDR.
