The Power of NASA Data
NASA generates an extraordinary volume of data—more than any other civil government agency—spanning Earth science, planetary exploration, astrophysics, aeronautics, space technology, and human spaceflight. From high-resolution satellite imagery and climate observations to deep-space telemetry and aeronautics test results, NASA’s missions produce petabytes of open, meticulously curated datasets every year.
The NASA Data Insignia immediately communicates credibility, transparency, and technical excellence, reinforcing that the organization’s insights, models, or tools are grounded in authoritative, openly available information produced through taxpayer-funded research and world-class missions. By highlighting their use of NASA data, companies can differentiate themselves in competitive markets, strengthen user confidence, and underscore their commitment to science-driven decision making—all while helping amplify the public benefit and visibility of NASA’s open-data mission.
NASA data is captured through some of the world’s most advanced instruments—orbital constellations, deep-space probes, telescopes, airborne campaigns, and laboratory facilities—and is published openly through platforms such as Earthdata, the NASA Open Data Portal, the Planetary Data System, and more. The result is a scientific archive of unparalleled breadth, accuracy, and historical continuity.
Crucially, NASA’s data doesn’t just power NASA missions—it fuels innovation across the entire ecosystem of government, academia, and industry. Emergency managers use NASA climate and weather observations to track wildfires, floods, and hurricanes. Farmers, agritech firms, and environmental agencies leverage NASA’s soil-moisture and land-use data to monitor drought, crop health, and water resources. Aviation companies rely on NASA aeronautics research to enhance safety and reduce emissions. Global scientists and universities use NASA’s open archives to drive breakthroughs in climate modeling, oceanography, planetary science, and astrophysics.
By making its world-class data freely accessible, NASA amplifies the return on investment for the nation—supporting economic growth, resilience, scientific discovery, and international collaboration on challenges that no single organization can solve alone.
Guidelines for Data Insignia Use
These guidelines outline the proper use of the NASA Data Insignia by external organizations on platforms and products that leverage NASA’s publicly funded scientific and technical data, models, algorithms, APIs, and tools. The Data Insignia’s purpose is to visibly acknowledge NASA’s contribution, ensuring transparency, promoting trust, and underscoring its role in innovation and public value.
Eligibility
The use of the NASA Data Insignia is reserved exclusively for platforms and products that make use of publicly available NASA data, models, algorithms, APIs, or tools as part of the work, including within applications, websites, exhibits, and presentations.
Permission to use the NASA Data Insignia is subject to ongoing compliance with these guidelines and may be revoked if the stated criteria are no longer met or if misuse occurs.
NASA Data Insignia Elements
The NASA Data Insignia format consists of the NASA Insignia displayed above the clarifying descriptor “DATA AT WORK”. The NASA Data Insignia must appear in full color or black and white, consistent with overall NASA Brand Guidelines, and always maintain clear legibility.
Clear space requirements of one “N” (the width of the letter “N” in NASA) are required on all boundaries. If any other brand markings are used the NASA Data Insignia must also be included in a box with a border of a contrasting color. The data insignia lockup must always be used as a single, cohesive unit. The identifier must not be altered, distorted, or reconfigured in any way.
Disclaimer Statement
When a disclaimer is required (as detailed in the following sections), the following statement must accompany the NASA Data Insignia:
This material includes data, models, or resources provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Any findings, interpretations, or conclusions presented do not necessarily reflect the views of NASA.
The disclaimer must be clearly visible and legible. It should be placed either directly below or beside the NASA Data Insignia, or accurately referenced via an asterisk linking to an identical disclaimer elsewhere on the same page (e.g., at the bottom). The disclaimer must appear in a legible sans-serif font and be proportionate to the Insignia.
Uses Where a Disclaimer Statement is Required:
- Press or informational materials where NASA data is being used.
- Exhibits or conference displays where NASA data is being used.
Use where a Disclaimer Statement is not Required:
- Internal communications where attribution is appropriate and clearly understood.
- Internal reports or stakeholder presentations not made public.
Prohibited Uses
The NASA Data Insignia shall not be used in any manner associated with, or on any materials related to, the following:
- Commercial advertising or fundraising.
- Promotional purposes.
- Lobbying, political, or cause-based messaging.
- The name, title, or likeness of any current NASA employee.
- Implying an ongoing partnership if the approved period or integration has ended.
- Any platform, product, or material that does not make substantial use of NASA data, tools, or systems.
- Implying co-ownership, sponsorship, or endorsement by NASA.
