How do you reduce aircraft engine noise, so it doesn’t bother the public around airports? One of the ways is to install acoustic liners around the turbofan rotor. Researcher Rick Bozak inspects fan blade tips on a rotor installed in a test facility at NASA Glenn that simulates the internal engine conditions required to study fan performance.

Modern aircraft engines utilize acoustic liners to reduce noise emissions. Additional acoustic liners installed directly over the fan have the potential to further reduce aircraft noise levels. Fan acoustic liners are one of many aircraft noise reduction concepts being evaluated by NASA’s Advanced Air Transport Technology Project.
