PROGRAM/PROJECT MANAGEMENT RESOURCE LIST #51

October 2017

You can only know where you’re going if you know where you’ve been. – James Burke, in Connections.

Human beings rely upon knowledge, instead of instinct, to guide them through their lives. From our earliest days, people around us give us lessons that we use to engage in our daily activities, whether they are as simple as table manners or as complex as the art of the watchmaker, these guidelines and lessons make us who we are. Knowledge management practices are the methods an organization uses to retain and pass along the knowledge produced by its workers, including libraries, archives, in-house magazines, and mentoring.

Knowledge management has an important place at NASA. The people who designed and built the capsules used in the Space Race and the Space Shuttles have retired, or are close to retiring. The lessons they learned over the years must be retained and handed on to the next generation, especially since the costs of some of them were measured in lives. You may also find useful resources in our webpages on Executive Resource Management and Human Capital Management in the Technical Fields.

All items are available at the Headquarters Library, except as noted. NASA Headquarters employees and contractors: Call x0168 or email Library@hq.nasa.gov for information on borrowing or in-library use of any of these items. Members of the public: Contact your local library for the availability of these items. NASA Headquarters employees can request additional materials or research on this topic. The Library welcomes your comments or suggestions about this webpage.
