According to Dorothy Leonard and Walter Swap in “Preserving Deep Smarts at NASA”, nearly half of NASA’s workforce was eligible for retirement in 2006. Many of the people who would leave would be the managers and leaders who set the agency’s course and steered its programs past obstacles towards their destinations. NASA can archive the lessons they learned through their careers and practice other techniques of knowledge management, but NASA will need to face the question of succession management just as it will also need to face the issues of Human Capital Management in the Technical Fields. The NASA HQ library also maintains resource lists on Transforming Engineers and Scientists Into Managers and Managerial Core Competence, which may shed some more light on the issues covered here.
