The Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions, or ACCESS II, research campaign now underway in California involves ground crews, scientists and principal investigators, and flight crews. The team includes research partners from Germany and Canada and is investigating fuel effects on aircraft cruise emissions and contrail formation.

Backing up the team are the aircraft being used for flight and ground tests: (l to r) the German Aerospace Center’s Falcon 20-E5, the National Research Council of Canada’s CT-133, NASA’s four-engine DC-8, and NASA’s HU-25C Guardian.

Within NASA, ACCESS II is a joint project involving Armstrong Flight Research Center, Calif.; Langley Research Center, Va.; and Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. The research supports NASA aeronautics’ strategic vision, which has as a goal to enable transition of industry to low-carbon fuels and alternative propulsion systems.
