NGC 454 is galaxy pair comprising a large red elliptical galaxy and an irregular gas-rich blue galaxy. This image is part of a large collection of images of merging galaxies taken by NASA Hubble Space Telescope.

New observations from NASA Spitzer Space Telescope reveal the Sombrero galaxy is not simply a regular flat disk galaxy of stars as previously believed, but a more round elliptical galaxy with a flat disk tucked inside.

This artist concept depicts a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy. NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer found evidence that black holes once they grow to a critical size stifle the formation of new stars in elliptical galaxies.

Evidence from NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer supports the long-held notion that many galaxies begin life as smaller spirals before transforming into larger, elliptical-shaped galaxies.

Two large elliptical galaxies, NGC 4889 and NGC 4874 are shown in this image from NASA Spitzer Space Telescope.

This diagram illustrates research from NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer showing that black holes once they reach a critical size can put the brakes on new star formation in elliptical galaxies.

This image from NASA WISE spacecraft shows a blazar, a voracious supermassive black hole inside a galaxy with a jet that happens to be pointed right toward Earth. Active black holes are often found at the hearts of elliptical galaxies.

This artist concept shows a feeding, or active, supermassive black hole with a jet streaming outward at nearly the speed of light. Such active black holes are often found at the hearts of elliptical galaxies.

Atlas Image mosaic, covering 34 x 34 on the sky, of the Coma cluster, aka Abell 1656. This is a particularly rich cluster of individual galaxies over 1000 members, most prominently the two giant ellipticals, NGC 4874 right and NGC 4889 left.
