Spacecraft Occupant Protection

SpaceX Crew Dragon Freedom spacecraft pictured as it lands in October 2022 with four crew members aboard. Re-entry to Earth is a central focus of ongoing NASA research because it’s a time of elevated injury risk and crew discomfort.

Description: This study will assess injury risk during landing by surveying crew members about any discomfort they may experience during re-entry to Earth and combining that information with sensor data from the spacecraft. This work specifically focuses on landing because it’s the most dynamic event of flight missions.

Impact: This information will influence future simulations and models to improve predictive injury work and help NASA design re-entry protocols and standards to protect crews as missions venture to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Type of study: Flight

Formal project title: Human Factors Occupant Protection
