A limited number of spaces are available for media to view the arrival of the USS Portland to Naval Base San Diego on the morning of Monday, Dec. 12, after the successful splashdown and recovery of the Orion spacecraft Sunday, Dec. 11, for NASA’s Artemis I mission. Media will be able to capture the ship’s arrival as well as speak with representatives from NASA and the Department of Defense.

In addition to arrival, media have the opportunity to capture the offload of the Orion capsule from the USS Portland Wednesday, Dec. 14, between 1 and 4 a.m. PST. Team members involved with recovery operations from NASA and the Department of Defense may be available for interviews.

Media interested in attending must contact Naval Base San Diego Public Affairs Office at nbsd.pao@us.navy.mil or 619-556-7359 by 9 a.m. PST on Friday, Dec. 9.

Following a successful launch on NASA’s Space Launch System rocket, Artemis I is testing the agency’s Orion spacecraft on a rigorous mission in the extreme environment of deep space before flying astronauts on Artemis II. The interagency landing and recovery team is responsible for safely recovering the capsule, and crew on future missions, after splashdown and returning them both to land. Artemis includes a series of increasingly complex missions that will enable human exploration at the Moon where the agency will prepare for future missions with crew to Mars.
