OSDR Chats with Oluwamayowa Akinsuyi on His Latest Publication

Welcome to “OSDR Chats”, a series of interviews with authors of Open Science Data Repository (OSDR)-enabled publications. In this format, OSDR has the opportunity to share highlights from researchers to provide comprehensive insights into the scope of their publications and to share the instrumental role played by the Open Science Data Repository or the Analysis Working Groups (AWGs) in facilitating their research. Our newest interview features a publication, “Gut permeability among Astronauts during Space missions” by PhD candidate Oluwamayowa Akinsuyi at the University of Florida who used five OSDR datasets (OSD-247OSD-249OSD-466OSD-530OSD-667) for his research.

The space environment poses significant challenges to human physiology, particularly affecting astronauts’ gut health. Understanding gut permeability is crucial for maintaining health during spaceflight. This publication analyzed human and murine samples, revealing that astronauts may experience leaky gut during spaceflight, as evidenced by changes in gene expression related to gut barrier function and microbial balance. These findings highlight the importance of identifying appropriate countermeasures to protect gastrointestinal health in space.

OSDR recently spoke to Oluwamayowa to hear about the highlights of this publication and about how the Open Science data systems and Analysis Working Groups (AWGs) enabled this publication.
