A large plume of smoke from fires raging in the Toros Mountains of Turkey was seen from space by NASA’s Aqua satellite. The plume was generated from fires in the Mersin Province of the country. The Mersin Province is on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast and is the southernmost part of the country.

This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite at 10:40 UTC (6:40 a.m. EDT) on July 3, 2017. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands appear in red. A large plume of smoke from several fires was blowing to the southwest over the northwestern part of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Republic of Cyprus, an island nation located south of Turkey seen at in the lower part of the Aqua satellite image was not being affected by the smoke from the fires.
