Over summer 2016, a group of interns working for NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program office participated in a brainstorming session to name the new SCaN project, a laser communications system for the next-generation Orion spacecraft. The system will provide communications services to long-distance space missions at a much higher data rate than any system currently available.
The students named the system LEMNOS, Laser Enhanced Mission and Navigation Operational Services, for the island from Greek mythology where Orion regained his sight.
