The beautiful Lake Baikul with snow surrounding its shores is juxtaposed in this image with the computer enhanced red dots which signify fire, especially when accompanied by smoke as in this image. Fire and ice are intertwined at this time of year and in this natural-color image captured by the Terra satellite’s MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) instrument on June 12, 2017. Most likely the fires began with lightning strikes since they are few in number and centered around the same area. Each hot spot, which appears as a red mark, is an area where the thermal detectors on the MODIS instrument recognized temperatures higher than background.
