Fires Continue to Blaze in Northern Australia

MODIS images of fires in Australia
The Darwin and Adelaide River area in Australia's Northwest Territory is under "severe alert" for fires.

The Darwin and Adelaide River areas in Australia’s Northwest Territory are under “severe alert” for fires. Several other areas are on “high alert” including, Carpentaria West, Carpentaria East, Gregory North West, and Gregory South East. The forecast for the area calls for sunny conditions throughout apart from a slight chance of showers about the northeast coast. Moderate east to southeasterly winds, tending fresh and gusty through central parts during the morning. The gusting winds could further exacerbate the fire conditions in the area.

This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite on August 05, 2015. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red.
