More than six times as sensitive as the 26 meter (85 foot) antenna it supplemented, Deep Space Station 43 (DSS-43), a 64 meter (210 foot) antenna, was completed in April 1973 allowing communications with missions farther from Earth. Upgraded to 70 meters (230 feet) in diameter in 1987 to support Voyager 1 and 2, DSS-43 became the largest steerable antenna in the southern hemisphere.
