The C-130 is a four turboprop engine tactical transport introduced into service in the mid-1950s. It served with the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, numerous foreign air forces, and private companies and airlines. NASA acquired the C-130B based at Dryden Flight Research Center in July of 1968. The aircraft was used by the Airborne Science Program after being fitted with equipment to measure earth resources.
