In its first decade as a NASA center, Marshall continued the Army’s work on the Mercury-Redstone vehicle which launched the country’s first astronaut, Alan Shepard into space. However, the majority of Marshall activities in propulsion concerned the development of the Saturn I, Saturn IB, and the Saturn V launch vehicles for the Apollo Program.
