The NASA-funded Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) is accepting research proposals for its Catalyst Grants Program to advance human exploration of space beyond low Earth orbit. The program provides a streamlined method of executing proof-of-concept projects that address critical needs, developing promising concepts with strong preliminary findings, and supporting innovative projects that present opportunities outside of regularly scheduled solicitation cycles.

What are we seeking?

This solicitation seeks new innovative research proposals to reduce risks to human health and improve performance during deep space exploration. Proposals are open to any project that addresses the NASA Human Research Roadmap  and TRISH Initiatives. Awards will be granted to new projects only. This opportunity is not meant to fund addendums to existing NASA projects.

Proposals tackling the following three topic areas of interest will receive higher priority:

  • Advancing technology to support remote crew health and performance monitoring
  • Advancing remote healthcare knowledge base
  • Advancing remote research capabilities

A full list of identified subtopics that will also receive higher review priority can be found in the complete solicitation here. All proposals should clearly justify how the project will reduce risks to human health and performance in space.

If you have a research idea that fits with this open solicitation, follow the steps below to submit a proposal for the Catalyst Grants program:

  1. Learn about TRISH research initiatives and visit NASA’s Human Research Roadmap.
  2. Become familiar with NASA’s five hazards of human spaceflight.
  3. Read this solicitation, which requires submission of a Step-1 proposal to be considered. Please refer to the solicitation for submission requirements.
  4. Submit a proposal through GRID. Proposers must submit through the TRISH Grant Research Integrated Dashboard (GRID) and must register in the system for award management (SAM) prior to receipt of funds.

Who can submit a proposal? All categories of U.S. institutions and companies are eligible to submit proposals. Principal investigators may collaborate with universities, the private sector, and federal, state, and local government laboratories. Please visit the Catalyst Grants Program solicitation for full details.

Research Duration: Tier 1 projects are limited to one year of funding. Tier 2 projects can be funded for up to two years. Refer to the full solicitation for details on Tier 1 and Tier 2 projects.

Award: Tier 1 project awards can reach a maximum total of $150K for one year. Tier 2 project awards have a two-year maximum. Modest budgets are prioritized.

Deadline: Catalyst Grants Program proposals are reviewed on a quarterly basis.

Background on TRISH: TRISH is a virtual institute empowered by the NASA Human Research Program to help solve challenges of human deep space exploration. TRISH pursues and funds research to deliver scientific and technological solutions that advance space health and help humans thrive wherever they explore, in space or on Earth.
