PROGRAM/PROJECT MANAGEMENT RESOURCE LIST #22

Developed Sept. 2017

Provided by the NASA Headquarters Library

“I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.”Douglas Adams

As a famous writer, Douglas Adams could take liberties with his projects. However, most people must deal with limited budgets and ever-encroaching deadlines. If a project is past its budget or beyond its allotted time, it may still run aground, even though it is free of technical risks. For instance, Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose successfully flew, but by the time it was done, the need for it had evaporated, and only the prototype remains.

On the other hand, a project that was completed on time and on budget may still fail, as in the case of an office building in a recession. The key is to balance both types of risk management with careful strategic planning. The resources listed here will help you work on the budget- and deadline-related issues in keeping a project on the rails. You may also find useful resources in our webpages on Project Management Introductory TextsProject Budgeting and Cost Control, and Earned Value Management.
