PROGRAM/PROJECT MANAGEMENT RESOURCE LIST #71

Sep. 2017

The Space Act, which established NASA in 1958, allows the agency to enter into partnerships with other federal agencies. For instance, the development of nanotechnology has caught the attention of NASA and ten other agencies. Rather than duplicate efforts, they formed a working group, currently called the National Nanotechnology Initiative. Through interagency collaboration, each agency can continue to develop nanotechnology for its own interests, use other agencies’ advances, and avoid “stovepiping” and interagency rivalries. This lightens the burden on the taxpayer in the development of a technology that is a growing influence on our economy. This resource list covers general issues of interagency collaboration, including the ways in which interagency efforts can go wrong. You may also find helpful materials in the HQ library’s webpage on International Cooperation in Space.
