Sept. 16 | Revolutionizing Medicine – in Space

Join us Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 3:30 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. to explore how studying human cells in deep space can advance healthcare on Earth, the Moon, and beyond. During this presentation and Q&A, NASA’s Biological and Physical Sciences Division Director Dr. Lisa Carnell will discuss how “organ chips” the size of a thumb drive can breathe like a lung and beat like a heart, why NASA wants to understand how deep space affects each astronaut before we go to Mars, and how this technology could advance biomedical research in aging, disease, and cancer treatments.

The AVATAR (A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response) investigation will use organ-on-a-chip devices, or organ chips, to study a effects of increased radiation and microgravity on human health. Artemis II AVATAR is a small experiment flying aboard Artemis II that could lead to big impacts in healthcare, both for astronauts in space and citizens on Earth.
