My name is Amílcar Matos Boneta, and I’m in El Central High School in Santurce, San Juan. I will be going into 12th grade now.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I will be presenting plankton alongside Dylan and Karen. I am going to be presenting our data that we found and also the university students’ data.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
My favorite part was diving and snorkeling because I love the water. I love seeing every creature and picking everything up. I spent the whole time just picking up the rocks and flipping them over and seeing what’s inside, and picking up little creatures and bringing them up so we can see them. So that was the most fun I had. And also the sea gliders blew my mind. Just lots of information. I couldn’t really pick one specific thing, but everything was really good.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
One small fun fact is that the sunfish are plankton. I didn’t know that. That was definitely surprising.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
I don’t really know specifically what I want to do with my study career, but this internship does narrow it down. And specifically in Magueyes – it was just an small island – it was full of scientific society. It was just pure scientists and it was a good work environment. I really liked it and we had boats close so we had easy access to Cayo Enrique and we could see open waters. So everything was just easy.
I also like photography. David, who was one of our chaperones, was doing some underwater photography and that really captured me. I want to maybe pursue something close to underwater photography and underwater film, or with drones, but specifically in ocean environments. So that’s something I would like to see if I can get into.
What was your favorite piece of merch that you got as part of OCEANOS?
Well, we got a little box that had lots of cool stuff, like a little microscope, and lots of stickers and stuff. But maybe the iPad, if that counts as merch? We also got a pin. That was nice.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
Definitely lots of information and knowledge, because we were bombarded with that from day one. And also friends, lots of friends, and good memories. We’re also going to be taking home valuable contacts. Every teacher here is really smart. They know what they’re doing. They know how to guide us. And everybody that was invited, like Martina and Allison, they also know and they have ways of helping us and they can help us with our PhDs, like Carla said, and also contacts like Sociedad Ambiente Marino (SAM) that could help us for volunteer work and for work, period.

¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Mi parte favorita fue el buceo y el esnórquel porque me encanta el agua. Me encanta ver cada criatura y recoger todo. Pasé todo el tiempo recogiendo las rocas y volteándolas y viendo lo que hay dentro, y recogiendo pequeñas criaturas y levantándolas para que podamos verlas. Así que eso fue lo más divertido que tuve. Y también los planeadores del mar me dejaron boquiabierto. Solo mucha información. Realmente no pude elegir una cosa específica, pero todo fue realmente bueno.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Un pequeño dato divertido es que los peces luna son plancton. No sabía eso. Eso fue definitivamente sorprendente.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Realmente no sé específicamente qué quiero hacer con mi carrera de estudio, pero esta pasantía lo reduce. Y específicamente en Magueyes -era solo una pequeña isla- estaba lleno de sociedad científica. Solo eran científicos puros y había un buen ambiente de trabajo. Me gustó mucho y teníamos barcos cerca por lo que teníamos fácil acceso a Cayo Enrique y podíamos ver aguas abiertas. Así que todo fue fácil.
También me gusta la fotografía. David, que era uno de nuestros chaperones, estaba haciendo algunas fotografías submarinas y eso realmente me cautivó. Quizá quiera dedicarme a algo parecido a la fotografía submarina y la película submarina, o con drones, pero específicamente en entornos marinos. Así que eso es algo en lo que me gustaría ver si puedo entrar.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Definitivamente mucha información y conocimiento, porque nos bombardearon con eso desde el primer día. Y también amigos, muchos amigos y buenos recuerdos. También nos llevaremos a casa valiosos contactos. Todos los maestros aquí son realmente inteligentes. Ellos saben lo que están haciendo. Ellos saben cómo guiarnos.
