My name is Alicia Cardona Varela. I’m from Patria Latorre Ramirez High School in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, and I’m now going into my senior year.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I’m presenting the theme of coral reefs. We’re presenting the vital role that corals play in protecting our coastlines, raising awareness that corals face significant challenges today: climate change, pollution and overfishing threaten their survival. It is essential to understand the importance of corals and take steps to protect and conserve these valuable ecosystems. That’s what we want to project to people.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
Being able to work in ecosystems as large as La Parguera and Culebra Island. The interactive part for me was my favorite – being able to work with scientists from all over and learn from them. I am excited to be able to share what I have learned with others.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
I want to study biomedical engineering. My favorite part of science is biology. I’m really good at it, and engineering; I can make things that can work on different things. To be able to explore, do research and be a scientist – that’s what I want. I’ve always loved the ocean. I want to incorporate the engineering and do things so I can help research on the ocean.
Was anything surprising for you in this program?
The internship has increased my awareness about the effects of human ecosystems, oceanic and coastal. I am taking great connections with wonderful and special people, not only with the project board but also with my classmates here in the high school area. A lot of group work, support, and mutual affection.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
The internship has completely surpassed my expectations. It has exceeded them. Everything provided – the stories of our mentors, the connections that we have been able to make within this project – have been more than perfect. But above all, I have learned I love being able to preserve the environment and carry it out into other projects as prestigious as this.

Mi nombre es Alicia Cardona Varela. Soy de la Escuela Secundaria Padre Ramírez en San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, y ahora estoy entrando en mi último año.
¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
Este es el papel vital que juegan los corales en la protección de nuestras costas. Crear conciencia de que los corales enfrentan desafíos importantes. En la actualidad, el cambio climático, la contaminación y la pesca excesiva amenazan su supervivencia. Es fundamental comprender la importancia de los corales y tomar medidas para proteger y conservar estos valiosos ecosistemas.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
El poder trabajar en ecosistemas tan grandes como la Parguera y la Isla de Culebra. La parte interactiva para mí fue mi preferida, el poder trabajar con científicos de todas partes, aprender de ellos. Este ha sido una de mis partes favoritas. Estoy emocionada de poder compartir lo que he aprendido con los demás.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Mi principio, lo que estoy pensando estudiar sería Ingeniería biomédica. Creo que mi parte preferida es dentro de la ciencia, es la biología. Se me da muy bien y quiero integrar la ingeniería con las ciencias oceanográficas para poder hacer investigaciones y poder hacer lo que realmente quiero, al final ser una científica.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
El internado ha aumentado mi conciencia sobre los efectos del ser humano y en los ecosistemas oceánicos y costeros. He creado grandes conexiones con personas maravillosas y especiales, específicamente no solo con la Junta de Proyecto, sino también con mis compañeros de clase aquí en el área de la escuela secundaria High School y mucho trabajo en grupo, apoyo, cariño mutuo, conocimiento y el internado completamente.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Me ha sorprendido mis expectativas, ha superado todo lo brindado, las historias de nuestros mentores, las conexiones que hemos podido hacer dentro de este proyecto ha sido más que perfecto, pero sobre todo lo aprendido. Me encanta el poder conservar el medio ambiente y llevar a cabo en un proyecto tan prestigioso como este.
