Jessica Taylor, a physical scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, was competitively selected to participate in the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science’s Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Leadership Program, a six-week professional development program. The program targets early and mid-career, U.S.-based STEM professionals.

According to the Alda Center’s website, the program seeks to elevate the work of women, whose voices are underrepresented in the STEM workforce. The goal of the training is to strengthen scientific research and discovery through inclusion.

“I’m honored to be part of the Alda Center’s Women in STEM Leadership Program,” Taylor said. “I’m excited to learn communication strategies to advocate for myself and others underrepresented in their field. I’m also looking forward to meeting other women from across STEM disciplines.”

Taylor leads the Langley Science Directorate’s Science Education team and serves as the principal investigator for the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to benefit the Environment Program) Program’s GLOBE Clouds as well the My NASA Data program. She first began working at Langley in 2009.

Women and other underrepresented groups make up a fraction of the STEM workforce in the United States, despite recent progress to increase diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. These groups represent an untapped talent pool.

The Alda Center’s Women in STEM Leadership Program offers workshops on essentials for women in STEM, advocacy and negotiation, and personal branding. It also gives participants the opportunity to network and support one another in the STEM field.

Through the program, based at Stony Brook University in New York, women and other underrepresented groups in STEM will be empowered to excel in their careers, rise to influence and decision-making positions, and foster more diversity, equity and inclusion in their fields.
