2014 Climate Risk Management Plan

Extreme weather events and climate are impacting NASA’s properties and operations. To support its mission and operations, NASA must manage the risks posed by extreme weather events and climate. It is for this reason that NASA is actively addressing climate risks through a risk management process and plan.

Consistent with its risk management policies, NASA addresses these impacts and risks in a Climate Risk Management Plan (PDF). NASA applies its scientific expertise and products to incorporate climate information into its decision making and planning to create innovative, sustainable, and flexible solutions to support climate-resilient NASA Centers.

NASA’s risk management policies are derived from statutory responsibilities and obligations. Specifically, NASA is mandated to apply the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s findings, such as the findings in the Fourth National Climate Assessment (2018), pursuant to NASA’s statutory responsibilities and obligations; 15 U.S.C. §2938 et seq. Further, the Government Accountability Office’s “2019 High Risk List” and 31 U.S.C. §1115 et seq. require NASA to limit and manage its exposure to climate risks. Moreover, NASA is mandated to safeguard its assets, such as property, from loss according to 31 U.S.C. §3512 et seq.
