After 23 years of service, Tracking and Data Relay Satellite 4 (TDRS-4) was super synched, passivated and turned off. One of the three batteries had failed and two others had reduced capacity placing the spacecraft at risk for an uncontrolled operation. Like its counterpart TDRS-1, it far exceeded its ten year life expectancy.
