An X3.1-class flare erupted from the lower half of the sun, peaking at 5:41 p.m. EDT on Oct. 24, 2014. This image of the flare was captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory and it shows extreme ultraviolet light at wavelengths of 171 and 304 angstroms.
