Artemis II Landing and Recovery Director

Liliana Villarreal currently serves as the Artemis II landing and recovery director in Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. She is responsible for leading NASA’s efforts for nominal and contingency recovery of astronauts and Orion hardware for Artemis crew missions. Prior to her current position, she was operations flow manager in EGS, responsible for the overall management, planning, integration, and execution of all operational ground and flight hardware activities required to support Orion and Space Launch System human space flight missions. She moved into the position in March 2021.

Villarreal also served as the Mission Operations Branch chief under the Operations Test and Management Division of EGS for two years. Prior to the branch chief role, she served as manager of the spacecraft and offline operations team, responsible for the offline operations of the Orion spacecraft and the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage. 

Experience

Prior to joining NASA in November 2007, Villarreal worked for The Boeing Company at Kennedy Space Center. She was a mechanical, assembly, and handling engineer, helping process several components and payloads for delivery to the International Space Station on space shuttle missions.

Awards

She is the recipient of various awards and recognitions, including a Space Flight Awareness Team Award in 2018, a Group Achievement Award in 2014, an Exceptional Medal of Achievement in 2013, and various certificates of achievement and certificates of commendation. She also received group achievement awards from Johnson Space Center in 2011 and 2009.

Education

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering in 1996, and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering in 1997, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Villarreal also earned a master’s degree in management of technology in 2002 from the College of Engineering at the University of Miami.

Personal

Villarreal was born in Cartagena, Colombia, but considers Miami, Florida, to be her hometown. She moved with her family to Florida when she was 10 years old.

Villarreal resides in Suntree, Florida, with her husband, Timothy O’Hare, a daughter, Sabrina, and son, Miguel.

Liliana Villarreal actualmente se desempeña como directora de aterrizaje y recuperación de Artemis II con el programa sistemas terrestres de exploración (EGS, por sus siglas en inglés) en el Centro Espacial Kennedy de la NASA en Florida. Ella es responsable de liderar los esfuerzos de la NASA para la recuperación nominal y de contingencia de los astronautas y el hardware de Orion para las misiones de la tripulación de Artemis. Antes de ocupar su puesto actual, fue gerente de flujo de operaciones en EGS, responsable de la gestión, planificación, integración y ejecución generales de todas las actividades operativas de hardware de vuelo y terrestres necesarias para respaldar las misiones de vuelos espaciales tripulados de Orion y el Sistema de Lanzamiento Espacial. Experiencia

Antes de unirse a la NASA en noviembre de 2007, Villarreal trabajó para Boeing en el Centro Espacial Kennedy. Era ingeniera mecánica, de montaje y manipulación, y ayudaba a procesar varios componentes y cargas útiles para su envío a la Estación Espacial Internacional en misiones de transbordadores espaciales.

Premios

Recibió varios premios y reconocimientos, incluido un premio del equipo de concienciación sobre vuelos espaciales en 2018, un premio al logro grupal en 2014, una medalla al logro excepcional en 2013 y varios certificados de logros y certificados de elogio. También recibió premios por logros grupales del Centro Espacial Johnson en 2011 y 2009.

Educación

Obtuvo una licenciatura en ingeniería aeroespacial en 1996 y una maestría en ingeniería aeroespacial en 1997, ambas del Instituto de Tecnología de Georgia. Villarreal también obtuvo una maestría en administración de tecnología en 2002 de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Miami.

Personal

Villarreal nació en Cartagena, Colombia, pero considera a Miami, Florida, como su ciudad natal. Se mudó con su familia a Florida cuando tenía 10 años.

Villarreal reside en Suntree, Florida, con su esposo, Timothy O’Hare, una hija, Sabrina, y un hijo, Miguel.
