History

Construction of Building 1153, originally designed as the Central Heating Plant, was approved in 1939 under the second Deficiency Appropriation Act. When completed in 1941, the original building was merely 51- by 36-feet. The original floor plan is shown in the 1942 facility description.

The building underwent major changes in the late 1970s. The interior, along with windows and doors, was gutted as evidenced by a 1978 photo. The newly refurbished building housed administrative offices.

A large addition in 1982 almost doubled the size of the facility, which was then known as the Professional Services Building Annex, and the Office of Educational Programs was relocated there. In the 1990s, the building housed part of the Langley Public Affairs Office, and prior to that it functioned as the Mechanical Maintenance Shop and Metal Finishing Shop. In the early 2000s and prior to demolition, the building housed training classrooms and the office of External Affairs.

Building 1153 was demolished in 2011 (along with buildings 1149 and 1152) to make room for construction of Building 2102, the Integrated Engineering Services Building.
