Ames Balance Calibration Taper Pin Type, Crimp and Insertion Tools

The Ames Balance Calibration Lab uses the AMP type taper pin for all Ames balances. This non-solder force-insertion contact provides years of fault tolerant connection of balance cables to the wind tunnel facility. It is highly recommended (and in most cases required) for customer balances to use this type of contact.

Use of Taper Pin Hand Crimp Tool

From AMP Inc document 408-1809

Following procedure is for #24 – #22 AWG wire. For smaller wire, see Taper Pin Installation to Balance Cables for additional information of taper pin installation to balance cables.

  • 1. Applicable Amp hand crimp tool for taper pin type 66071 is the Amp P/N 90026.
  • 2. Strip wire to 0.218 inches (a 1/32″ less than quarter inch) – do NOT cut or nick the wire strands.

  • 3. Hold tool so BACK (wire side) faces you.
  • 4. Make sure ratchet is released – squeeze tool handles together and allow them to open FULLY.
  • 5. Slide terminal (the taper pin) tip through hole in locator until terminal shoulder butts against locator. See below.

diagram of installing balance taper pin.

  • 6.Hold terminal in this position and squeeze tool handles together just enough so crimping jaws hold terminal in place.    Do NOT deform insulation barrel or wire barrel.
  • 7. Insert a properly stripped wire into terminal wire barrel until it bottoms.
  • 8. Holding wire in place, squeeze tool handles together until ratchet releases.
  • 9. Allow tool handles to open FULLY and remove crimped terminal from tool.

Use of Taper Pin Insertion Tool

From AMP Inc document IS-7078

  • 1. Recommended Amp “Certi-Lok” insertion tool for taper pin type 66071 is the Amp P/N 380431-2 with P/N 380429-1 tip (the Amp P/N 380430-2 insert tool does not have a pull-test spring).
  • 2. Place the wire barrel of the terminal into the slot in the tip of the tool. The end of the tip must butt against the  shoulder of the terminal.
  • 3. Let the wire slant out through the side of the tip as shown below. Use your finger to hold the terminal in the tip.

  • 4. Align the tool to provide clearance for removing the tool from terminal after insertion.
  • 5. With the terminal in the tip, insert the terminal into the receptacle as shown below.

Diagram of balance taper pin insertion tool.

Note: While inserting the terminal, keep the tool, terminal, and receptacle in a straight line.

  • 6. With a straight, steady motion, push the tool toward the receptacle until the tool trips. Use only ONE stroke for each insertion. Extra strokes may damage the receptacle.
  • 7. To test the connection, slowly pull the sleeve until it moves the tool. Ignore this part if using Insert tool P/N 380430-2.
  • 8. If the terminal remains in place, the connection is good. If the terminal pulls out, repeat steps 3 through 8. If the terminal pulls out again, check the receptacle.
  • 9. Remove the tool from the terminal. Do not bend or twist the terminal. If the terminal is bent or twisted during the tool removal, remove and re-insert it.
