In this underwater image, a group of swimmers in snorkel gear swim along the surface of the water, dragging a white PVC frame. The water is teal blue, and the seafloor below is covered in dark brown rocks.

Prepping the Coral Farm

Divers bring a frame filled with small pieces of coral into deeper waters, where they will anchor it to the seafloor to grow for a few years before replanting that coral into damaged and dying reefs. As part of the OCEANOS (Ocean Community Engagement and Awareness using NASA Earth Observations and Science) internship, students (neon orange shirts) learn about coral reef ecology and restoration, helping to build these coral 'farms' as part of the field work section of the internship.
