Explanation or story behind the patch: During a preflight test on January 27, 1967, for what was to be the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 204, a fire claimed the lives of three U.S. astronauts; Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. After the disaster, the mission was officially designated Apollo 1.
