The nonprofit Bay Area Turning Point is a community-based social service agency that provides a variety of services, including shelter, to families in need. BATP also offers services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and the agency participates in public education/crime prevention activities in the Greater Bay Area and surrounding locales. NASA’s Johnson Space Center interns pay multiple visits each year to the BATP, volunteering their Saturdays to different projects. One way the interns have contributed is by assisting the BATP Resale Shop. The shop gives BATP clients vouchers to purchase clothing and other items free of charge, and it generates funds for the social service agency from the sale of goods to the public. NASA interns help by tagging items, arranging displays, dusting, mopping and more.
