The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series (GOES-R) is the next generation of geostationary weather satellites. The GOES-R Series includes GOES-R (GOES-16), GOES-S (GOES-17), GOES-T (GOES-18) and GOES-U (GOES-19). The advanced spacecraft and instrument technology used on the GOES-R series will result in more timely and accurate forecasts and warnings. It will improve support for the detection and observations of meteorological phenomena. The GOES-R Series Program is a collaborative development and acquisition effort between The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA to develop, launch and operate the geostationary weather satellites. Like the other satellites in the series, GOES-17 carries a suite of sophisticated Earth-sensing, lightning-detecting, solar imaging and space weather monitoring instruments.

Launch: March 2018

Operating Network: Near Space Network
