The venerable B-52 mothership (tail number 008), which has been a mainstay of NASA’s flight research program and an enduring workhorse at the Dryden Flight Research Center for more than four decades, soars aloft with an F-18 chase plane on its 952nd flight to commemorate its 40th anniversary. Over the years, the B52 has launched vehicles ranging from the X-15, which was the first aircraft to reach the edges of space, to the X-38, a vehicle built as part of a program to develop an emergency crew return vehicle for the International Space Station.
