The 64 meter antennas at the three Deep Space Network (DSN) facilities were upgraded to 70 meter. The antenna in Madrid, Spain was operational in July, the one is Canberra, Australia was active in October and the one in Goldstone, California was ready in May 1988. All three antennas were completed in time for Voyager’s Neptune encounter, which required bigger antennas in order to receive the very weak signals.
