NASA Role: Chief of Staff at Langley Research Center Military Service: Navy

Andrew Carnell

What is your role at NASA?
As the Langley Research Center Chief of Staff I am part of the leadership team that runs Langley and delivers capabilities to advance NASA’s aeronautics, science, and space missions.

Can you briefly describe your military experience?
I served 8 years and left the service as a O-3/Lieutenant. I was a Naval Flight Officer with 2 combat cruises in F-14 Tomcats. I was also a Topgun Instructor.

How do veterans or military spouses benefit NASA?
Leadership is an obvious answer, but I think the best benefit is the diversity of a military perspective compared to the existing NASA research/engineering culture when looking at issues and considering solutions. Commitment to mission and diversity of experience will help drive NASA’s mission forward.

How are you involved in the veteran community at NASA?
I helped coordinate a “listening session” after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan that resulted in a one-hour meeting facilitated by mental health experts for NASA veteran employees to share their feelings.
