Studies based on observations from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show that hot Jupiters, exoplanets around the same size as Jupiter that orbit very closely to their stars, often have cloud or haze layers in their atmospheres.

The super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cancri e, depicted with its star in this artist's concept, likely has an atmosphere thicker than Earth's but with ingredients that could be similar to those of Earth's atmosphere.

This artist's illustration of the exoplanet LHS 3844b, shows the planet's surface may be covered mostly in dark lava rock, with no apparent atmosphere, according to observations by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.

The filters on NASA's Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument's Color Filter Assembly each block all but a specific wavelength of light. Many of the filters appear dark in this photo because they are transparent only to infrared light.
