Stephen Bowen

Director, Cross-Directorate Technical Integration for Space Operations (acting)

Stephen G. Bowen is the acting director of Cross-Directorate Technical Integration for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate, where he is responsible for agencywide coordination between Space Operations management, programs, and activities, and NASA programs. In this role, Bowen communicates across teams to ensure consensus on technical matters, facilitating the reliable delivery of information regarding Space Operations key services and NASA missions.  

Bowen was the first Submarine Officer to be selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2000, and since then has logged a total of 227 days in space on his four flights. He flew on space shuttle missions STS-126STS-132, and STS-133and served as Commander of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 mission in 2023. 

Prior to joining NASA, Bowen served for fourteen years in the U.S.  Submarine Service with tours onboard USS Parche (SSN 683), USS Augusta (SSN 710) and, as Executive Officer of Pre-Commissioning Unit Virginia (SSN 774).  Additional tours included United States Special Operations Command and the Navy’s Submarine Board of Inspection and Survey. 

Bowen has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, and a master’s degree in ocean engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program.
