Acting Associate Administrator for Communications
Michelle R. Jones serves as the acting associate administrator for communications, ensuring that NASA fulfills its National Aeronautics and Space Act, 51 U.S.C. § 20112(a) mandate to “provide for the widest practicable and appropriate dissemination of information concerning its activities and the results thereof.” Jones ensures that America and the world understands that we explore the secrets of the universe for the benefit of all.
Jones also holds the title of deputy associate administrator for communications at NASA. In this capacity, Jones directs NASA’s strategic communications organization to effectively explain the objectives, benefits, and challenges of NASA’s missions, programs, activities, and functions to the media, public, stakeholders and agency employees.
Jones also ensures that the agency provides timely, effective, and accurate communications through close coordination with the mission directorates, field centers and mission support enterprise organizations.
Before her current role, Jones served as director of the office of communications at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD overseeing internal and external communications programs. Jones led her team to inform, inspire and engage audiences on the value of Goddard, its work and its people.
Throughout her more than three decades at NASA, Jones has successfully developed and implemented cutting-edge communications strategies and built strategic partnerships with government agencies, academic institutions, and private sector entities for the agency. She has connected countless people with NASA missions and helped them understand the agency’s positive impact in their lives.
Jones has earned numerous awards and honors, including the NASA Honor Award Silver Achievement Medal (2021) and Exceptional Achievement Medal (2009). Jones earned her bachelor’s degree in communications studies from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
