Solar Eclipse Day

April 8, 2024 | 10 a.m.

Bring your solar glasses from the October eclipse back to the museum for opportunities to watch the sun hide again! Viewing monitors will broadcast live coverage of the eclipse from along the path of totality, offering a unique viewpoint of the phenomenon as it unfolds. Other events that day include planetarium presentations about the eclipse (free with museum admission), hands-on family-friendly activities inside the museum, and safe viewing of the partial eclipse in the Museum Observatory and through other telescopes.

Total Solar Eclipse with Las Cruces Public Libraries and Las Cruces Museums

Las Cruces Public Libraries and Las Cruces Museums are partnering to host a watch party for the eclipse. There will be multiple tables with various activities for families. Solar eclipse glasses will be handed out while our limited supply lasts.

Very Large Array Spring Open House (April 20)

The VLA is open every day for general public tours, including during FYPIS Week, but will be holding a special free Open House on April 20, 2024

The Very Large Array Radio Telescope facility is a two-hour drive from Albuquerque, 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. The Visitor Center features an award-winning documentary narrated by Jodie Foster, plus exhibits describing radio astronomy and the VLA telescope. A self-guided walking tour features large, informative signs and takes you to the base of one of the giant dish antennas. A gift shop offers VLA souvenirs and educational materials. VLA Spring Open House (April 20): Please join us for a free day of tours and talks at the Very Large Array! This event will take place, Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 9am – 4pm. NRAO staff will be on site all day to answer any and all of your questions. Guided tours given by NRAO scientist and engineers will every half hour between 9:30am – 3pm. There will also be talks by guest experts in both the morning and repeated in the afternoon. Detailed program to come! Admission is free, but advance tickets are required.
