This natural-color satellite image of oil fires in Libya was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite on January 07, 2016. The fires were caused by shelling on an oil terminal in Libya. The fires caused by the initial shelling have spread to giant storage tanks. The fires are reported to be raging in Sidra, on the coast between Sirte and Benghazi. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red.
