This week in 1977, the High Energy Astronomy Observatory 1, designed to survey the sky for X-ray and gamma ray energy sources, launched aboard an Atlas/Centaur launch vehicle. Launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the HEAO program was managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and included two additional low-Earth-orbiting spacecraft. The NASA History Program documents and preserves NASA’s remarkable history through a variety of products — photos, press kits, press releases, mission transcripts and administrators’ speeches.
