In this 1975 photo, research pilot Thomas C. McMurtry stands in front of the X-24B on Rogers Dry Lake, adjacent to the NASA Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA. A former U.S. Navy pilot and graduate of the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, MD, McMurtry was a consultant for Lockheed Corporation before joining NASA in 1967. The X-24B was the last aircraft to fly in Dryden’s manned lifting body program.
